F3 Caliper FAQ's
What makes the F3 caliper different from other TBM calipers?
The F3 is TBM’s top-tier 3-piston caliper, designed specifically for high-horsepower drag racing. It features 2618 Forged caliper halves for maximum stiffness, hardened 4140 Chromoly C-sections for withstanding high brake pressures, internal fluid crossover, and minimal weight—all optimized for Zero Drag performance.
What applications is the F3 caliper best suited for?
The F3 Caliper is ideal for:
-
Pro Mod
-
Radial vs. the World
-
No-Prep and Heads-Up builds
-
High-power street/strip cars
-
Heavy bracket racers needing extra clamping force with minimal deflection
-
Sprint Cars / Late Models
How many pistons does the F3 have, and why?
It has Four pistons—a TBM-exclusive design that balances powerful clamping force with even pad wear and weight savings. The four-piston layout helps prevent pad taper and ensures smooth engagement.
4. Is the F3 caliper directional?
No, the caliper is non-directional. You can mount it on either side of the vehicle, as long as the bleeder is the highest point on the caliper.
5. What type of mounting does it use?
The F3 is available in 5.25" & 3.50" lug mount configurations. Be sure to select the right version based on your application.
6. What is TBM Brakes Zero Drag Technology?
Zero Drag Technology is a proprietary design philosophy built into every TBM caliper. It ensures the brake pads fully release from the rotor after each stop—eliminating the subtle but costly friction that standard calipers often leave behind.
This isn’t just a feel-good feature. In racing, especially drag racing, every ounce of resistance costs you time, speed, and performance. TBM’s zero drag system ensures that your car rolls freer, cooler, and faster after every pass.
7. What brake pads work with the F3 caliper?
TBM offers multiple compound options specifically for the F3 but our most common brake pads for drag racing is:
-
6-0102W
8. Does the F3 require a specific rotor thickness?
Yes. The F3 is designed for a specific rotor width—usually .375" or .500" depending on the kit. Always match rotor and caliper spacing properly to ensure pad-to-rotor alignment and performance.
9. Can I rebuild the F3 caliper myself?
Yes. TBM offers rebuild kits with seals and pistons. The caliper is designed for field-serviceability, making it ideal for racers who want to maintain their own equipment. TBM also offers rebuild services where you can send in your caliper to have it assessed and rebuilt by our highly skilled technicians, turnaround times are usually 1 business day.
10. How do I bleed the F3 caliper?
Use the bleeder screw at the top of the caliper, ensuring the caliper is mounted upright. Bleed until air bubbles are gone and the pedal is firm. TBM Xtreme6 DOT 5.1 is recommended.
11. Will the F3 clear my wheels?
The F3 is compact for its power, but clearance still depends on your wheel diameter and backspacing. TBM provides fitment diagrams and can assist with templates if you’re unsure.
12. Is the F3 caliper made in the USA?
Yes— machined, assembled, and tested in Mooresville, NC. TBM takes pride in 100% American manufacturing and materials.
