TBM HD Rotor: Built for the Demands of Sportsman and Bracket Racing
Drag racers ask a lot from their braking system.
Round after round. Pass after pass. Minimal cool down time. Absolute consistency.
That’s exactly why we developed the TBM 11.50 x .500 HD Rotor (1150500D-HD) now featured in our Sportsman HD and Top Sportsman Brake Kits. This rotor was designed specifically for racers who demand dependable, repeatable braking performance while still maintaining the lightweight design TBM brakes are known for.
Why We Created the HD Rotor
Bracket racers and sportsman racers face a unique challenge. Unlike Heads up classes where cars may only make a few passes per day, bracket racers often make many back-to-back runs in a single event, sometimes with very little time between rounds. That kind of use can fatigue traditional lightweight rotors over time.
When we set out to develop the 1150500D-HD rotor, our goal was clear: Increase durability and heat stability without sacrificing the lightweight & Dependable performance TBM brakes are known for.
To accomplish this, we engineered the rotor with additional mass in key structural areas where repeated braking cycles typically introduce fatigue. This added material helps the rotor better withstand the stresses created during back-to-back runs, improving longevity and maintaining consistent performance throughout long race weekends.
Engineered for Heat Control
Just like all TBM rotors, the HD rotor features our signature scalloped design, but this isn’t about aesthetics. Every curve and cutout is carefully engineered to promote even heat distribution across the rotor’s surface area.
In drag racing, braking happens in short but extremely intense bursts. When heat distributes evenly, the rotor expands at a predictable rate and returns to the same shape once it cools. This consistency is critical for racers who rely on repeatable braking performance and consistent pedal feel run after run.
The rotor is also manufactured from our proprietary “Top Fuel” rotor material, designed specifically to resist warping under extreme temperatures. Combined with the engineered rotor profile, this material helps maintain rotor stability even under demanding race conditions.
Strength Where It Matters
While many rotors simply add thickness to increase strength, the 1150500D-HD rotor takes a more refined approach. We strategically increased mass in the areas most susceptible to fatigue during repeated braking cycles.
This targeted reinforcement allows the rotor to handle the stresses of multiple back-to-back passes while still maintaining the lightweight performance racers expect from TBM. The result is a rotor that delivers greater durability and longer service life, without introducing unnecessary rotating mass.
Designed to Fit Tight Wheel Packages
Modern drag racing wheel packages continue to evolve, and many racers are running tight clearances especially with double beadlock wheels. Because of this, maintaining a low-profile rotor design was a key priority during development.
Even with the increased structural durability of the HD rotor, we maintained the compact TBM profile that allows the rotor to clear even the tightest wheel and brake packaging combinations. This ensures racers can upgrade to the HD rotor without sacrificing fitment or changing their wheel setup.
The Goal
When we designed the 1150500D-HD rotor, we focused on three key goals:
• Improve durability for repeated back-to-back runs
• Maintain consistent braking performance throughout race events
• Retain the lightweight, low-profile design TBM is known for
Because in sportsman racing and bracket racing, consistency wins rounds.
Built for Racers Who Go Rounds
The 11.50 x .500 HD Rotor represents TBM’s continued commitment to building braking systems designed specifically for drag racers.
More durability where it matters, consistent performance pass after pass, and a design that still fits the tight packaging demands of modern race cars.
Because when you’re racing for the win light, every component has to perform.
